Sandriver to launch its latest bespoke and ethical cashmere collections
in MAISON&OBJET Paris (17-21 Jan 2020)

Originated from Inner Mongolia, the Shanghai-based cashmere producer Sandriver will make its debut in the world’s renowned design fair MAISON&OBJET Paris from 17th to 21st January in Paris Nord Villepinte, France.

Endowed with the unique natural resources and magnificent prairies, Inner Mongolia is the home of Sandriver Cashmere and its founder Juliet Guo. Deeply cared about the sustainable development of cashmere production, Guo has spent 20 years to build up her own industry supply chain in order to assure the top quality of cashmere fibers and safeguard the livelihood of her community herdsmen. Studied in Germany, Guo has modernized the cashmere production with a sustainable approach. Sandriver is the first international cashmere brand from China that could guarantee the totality of bespoke and ethical cashmere production.

“Sandriver has strived to be the epitome of socially responsible cashmere producer through our humane operation of Sandriver’s family pasture in Alxa League, Inner Mongolia; our care for preserving the environment and tradition throughout the production; and our determination in harmonising craft and technology at our Research & Development Centre in Shanghai. In Maison&Objet Paris, we hope to share with the global market our core values - Care, Craft and Comfort, and offer our expertise to create unique experience to our patrons,” said Juliet Guo, the founder of Sandriver.

Committed to create only the finest quality of cashmere, Sandriver has been working with forward-looking creators and clients, such as designer Junko Koshino, artist Francesca Brenda-Mitterrand, The Aman Hotels Group and the Rosewood Hotels and Resorts, to further their believes in promoting the sustainable values and irreplaceable comfort of cashmere. “Sandriver’s technical realization is something that I have been longing for. Therefore, our cooperation is as natural as a destiny,” commented Junko Koshino, Japan’s highly reclaimed fashion designer, who has been working closely with Sandriver since 2012.

In Maison&Objet Paris, Sandriver will bring the nomadic lifestyle of Alxa League to the City of Lights, debuting the bespoke Handcrafted Felt Collection and the ultra-comfort Home and Interior Collection which are specially created for the exhibition.

MORE ABOUT SANDRIVER

Sands of Desires, Rivers of Livelihood

Home of Sandriver and History of Cashmere Felt

The Alxa League or Alashan League is a shining pearl in Inner Mongolia, Northwest China. Its inhabitants including Juliet Guo’s family and her ancestors who have been blessed with unique natural resources and heritage – the most precious Alxa cashmere goats and a brilliant ethnic culture. In the spring molting season, the weather begins to warm and local Alashan herders use special coarse combs to separate the cashmere fibers from the goats’ coats or fleece; this step causes no pain or discomfort to the herd.

To the ancient nomads in Inner Mongolia, the felt making process was seen as an expression of common efforts and a benediction among the participating families. Today, Sandriver has shared these tradition and techniques through its collaboration with designers and artists to create unique pieces for fashion and home. The brand also hosts regular workshops for its patrons to experience the joy of kneading, rubbing and shaping in the felting process.

Quality of Sandriver’s cashmere fibres

The underdown of Alashan goats is of unique and exceptional quality; it is longer and finer than that of any other cashmere goat. Sandriver’s family pasture only breeds purebred Alashan goats to support the preservation of this full-blooded breed, and to guarantee the true and pure luxury of its genuine cashmere products. Sandriver has successfully established direct and long-term supply relations with 30 herding families, each of whom owned about 100 goats on their own grasslands.

Sandriver only uses cashmere with a length of 36-plus mm and a fineness of 14-15 microns. The quality of this cashmere is so high that it can be used to weave the famed “200-count” scarves; meaning that only one gram of cashmere is spun into 200 meters of yarn.

Sustainable approach

In 2012, Juliet Guo set up the ‘Sandriver Foundation’ which is a dedicated education fund to enhance the learning environment and condition of the pastoral children. Annual funding is provided to the community. The foundation also aims at rebuilding the relationship between the culture and nature investing heavily in the Alxa Grassland as a global cashmere base and provider of the pure Alxa goat breed and working to protect this exceptional breed.

Guo holds over 200 personal patents and is regarded as a pioneer in the field of innovative textile technology. Under her leadership, the Research & Development Centre of Sandriver which is situated at the Jinshan District of Shanghai hosts a team of experienced craftsmen and textile experts. To retain cashmere’s flexible characteristics, Sandriver uses ‘natural’ cashmere colour from grass and insects found on the Inner Mongolian prairies. When using auxiliary materials and additives, only high-grade green dyeing auxiliaries from Germany are applied.

Experience in the global high-end hospitality industry

Sandriver works closely with some of the most forward-looking hoteliers who meticulously create bespoke experience for their guests. In Aman Yangyun Shanghai, Aman Yihe Beijing, Aman Laos and Aman Tokyo, Sandriver has customized a series of cashmere bedspreads for the guest rooms. With the Rosewood Hotels and Resorts in Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Sanya, Sandriver’s cashmere have been tailored to the various needs in the guest rooms, spa as well as staff uniform. Selected collections are available in some of the hotel gift shops where the guests could take home a meaningful souvenir of their memorable stay.
